The Simple Trick to Improve Your Spiritual Recovery Right Now

Friend, let’s be real for a second. Are you tired?
I mean that soul-deep, "I-can’t-do-this-one-more-day" kind of tired. Maybe you’re white-knuckling your recovery, just trying to make it to the next meeting without breaking down. Maybe you feel like you’re drowning in the "to-dos" of spiritual life, pray more, read more, be better, do better.
Does it actually work? I get it. I was skeptical too. For a long time, I thought spiritual recovery was this massive, mountain-sized task that I had to conquer with my own strength.
But here’s the truth: You can’t white-knuckle your way to TRANSFORMATION.
I’ve been where you are. I’ve felt that raw, messy, and honestly terrifying pressure to stay sober while feeling completely disconnected from God. I used to think I needed a three-hour prayer marathon or a theology degree to "fix" my spirit.
But I found a "secret" that changed EVERYTHING.
It’s a simple trick. It’s not fancy. It’s not technical. It’s the "practical stuff" that actually keeps your head above water when the waves start crashing in.
The Power of the 5-Minute Check-In
Think about it this way: If you’re driving a car and the "low fuel" light comes on, you don’t ignore it for three days, right? (Well, maybe some of us do, but we usually end up stuck on the side of the road!)
Your spirit has a "low fuel" light too. Most of us are running on fumes because we think we don’t have the time or energy for a "perfect" spiritual life.
The simple trick? The 5-Minute Spiritual Check-In.
It’s about DAILY surrender, not yearly resolutions. It’s about showing up exactly as you are, messy hair, cravings, doubts, and all, and just giving God five minutes of honest conversation.

Why This Works (When Everything Else Fails)
Why does this tiny habit make such a massive difference? Because recovery isn't about being perfect; it's about being CONNECTED.
When we try to do it all ourselves, we’re essentially telling God, "I’ve got this." But the truth is, we don't. We need GRACE like we need oxygen.
This 5-minute check-in isn't just another box to check. It’s a lifeline. It’s you saying "YES" to God’s help before you even start your day.
I talk about this a lot in my book, Courageous: A Life Redeemed by Grace. In those pages, I share the raw details of my own journey through addiction and the moments where I realized that my own strength was never going to be enough. I had to learn that redemption isn't a destination; it's a daily walk.

How to Do the Check-In (The Practical Stuff)
Life skills, baby! Here is exactly how you do it. No fluff. No excuses.
1. Pray Honestly (2 Minutes) Don’t use "churchy" words if you don’t want to. Talk to Him like a friend. "God, I’m struggling today. I’m angry. I’m craving. Help me." This is where you lay down the weight.
2. Read One Verse (2 Minutes) Don’t try to read the whole Bible in one sitting. Just find ONE verse that reminds you of who you are in Christ. One verse that reminds you that you are LOVED and REDEEMED. Let it sink in.
3. Write One Gratitude (1 Minute) Shame and gratitude cannot live in the same heart at the same time. Write down one thing: just one: that you’re thankful for. Maybe it’s just that the coffee is hot. That counts.

You Are Not Alone in This
I know it feels lonely. I know the voice in your head says you’ve messed up too many times for this to work.
But listen to me: That is a lie.
Transformation is possible for anyone. I’ve seen it in my own life, and I see it every single day through our Freedom Houses. We are a community of people who have been burned by life but are choosing to walk toward the light anyway.
If you’re struggling to find that light, don’t try to find it alone. Reach out. Whether you need a speaker for your next event or you’re looking for a way to get involved with the ministry, we are here for you.
