Let’s be real for a second, friend.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve felt the weight of the world on your shoulders. You’ve felt that suffocating, heavy blanket of addiction that tells you there is no way out. You’ve probably tried to "fix" yourself a thousand times. You’ve made the promises. You’ve emptied the bottles, thrown away the stash, and sworn, white-knuckled and trembling, that this time would be different.
And then, the cycle repeats.
I get it. I’ve lived it. I’ve been in that raw, messy place where hope feels like a cruel joke. But I’m here to tell you that there is a path that doesn’t just involve "stopping." There is a path that involves TRANSFORMATION.
When we talk about spiritual recovery from addiction, we aren’t just talking about a religious checklist. We are talking about a total overhaul of the heart, mind, and soul through the power of Jesus Christ. It’s not about being "perfect"; it’s about being REDEEMED.
Before you take another step, here are 5 things you absolutely need to know about what spiritual recovery really looks like.
1. Sobriety and Recovery are NOT the Same Thing
This is the big one. This is the TRUTH that changes everything.
You can be sober, meaning you aren’t currently using a substance, and still be absolutely miserable. We call that being a "dry drunk" or just plain old "white-knuckling." It’s when you’ve removed the drug, but you haven’t replaced the void. You’re still angry, still anxious, and still hurting.
Sobriety is about what you STOP doing. Recovery is about who you BECOME.
Think of it like this: If a house is on fire, putting out the flames is the first step. That’s sobriety. But once the fire is out, you still have a charred, smoke-damaged house that isn’t fit to live in. Recovery is the process of gutting the ruin and rebuilding something beautiful and strong from the foundation up.
Spiritual recovery focuses on the "why" behind the fire. It asks the hard questions and allows God to perform surgery on the parts of your heart you’ve tried to keep hidden. If you want to stay free, you have to go deeper than just staying clean. You have to find your PURPOSE.

2. You Cannot "Self-Help" Your Way Out of a Soul Problem
Does it actually work? Can I really just "pray it away"?
I hear those questions all the time. And the answer is: you can’t do it alone, and it’s not just about "trying harder."
Most of us have tried the self-help route. We’ve read the books, we’ve listened to the podcasts, and we’ve tried to use willpower to beat a giant. But addiction is a soul-level battle. It’s a spiritual void that we’ve been trying to fill with things that were never meant to fit.
In a faith-based recovery journey, we recognize that we are powerless on our own. And honestly? That is the most REFRESHING realization you will ever have. When you finally stop trying to be your own savior, you make room for the REAL Savior to step in.
Turning to a HIGHER POWER, specifically, Jesus, isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s the ultimate act of courage. It’s saying, "I’m tired of being the boss of a life that is falling apart." When you surrender, you get access to a strength that isn't yours. It’s GRACE in action, baby!
If you want to hear more about how this surrender changed my life, check out Stephanie's Testimony. It wasn't pretty, and it wasn't fast, but it was real.
3. Healing Must Be Holistic (Body, Mind, and Spirit)
Addiction is a thief. It doesn’t just steal your money or your time; it burns down your physical health, wrecks your brain chemistry, and leaves your spirit feeling like a desert.
You can’t just fix one part and expect the rest to fall into place. That’s why we talk so much about HOLISTIC recovery. You need to nourish your body, seek professional help for your mental health (because yes, Jesus and therapy are a power duo!), and feed your spirit with the Word of God.
Spiritual recovery provides the "glue" that holds the other pieces together. It gives you:
Better Coping Skills: Instead of reaching for a bottle when stress hits, you reach for prayer or a sister in Christ.
Optimism: You start to believe that your future isn't defined by your past.
Social Support: You find a tribe that loves you for who you are, not what you can do for them.
I’ve written a whole deep dive on why everyone is talking about holistic recovery programs because it is just that important. You are a whole person, and God wants to heal the WHOLE you.

4. Community is Your Secret Weapon
Isolation is where addiction grows. It’s like mold: it loves the dark, damp corners of "I’m fine" and "I can handle this myself."
But friend, you were never meant to carry this cross alone.
One of the most vital parts of spiritual recovery is finding your people. This is why things like Celebrate Recovery are so life-changing. There is something radical that happens when you sit in a room with other people who aren't pretending to have it all together.
When you share your story, the shame starts to lose its grip. You realize that your "secret" is actually the same secret everyone else is carrying. In a faith-based community, you find people who will walk through the fire with you, pray for you when you can't find the words, and remind you of your IDENTITY in Christ when you've forgotten it.
Don't do life in the dark. Come into the light. The community is where the "raw" becomes "redeemed."
5. Your Past is a Platform, Not a Prison
This might be the hardest thing to believe when you’re in the thick of it: God does not waste your pain.
In the world's eyes, your addiction is a "stain" or a "gap in your resume." But in God’s economy, your mess becomes your message. All those years you felt like you were drowning? Those are the years that give you the authority to reach back and pull someone else out of the water.
In my book, Courageous, I talk about how we find healing and purpose in the middle of the wreckage. You don't have to wait until you are "perfect" to start being used by God. He uses the broken pieces to make a masterpiece.
When you embrace spiritual recovery, you realize that your story isn't over. It's just getting to the good part: the part where you find out WHY you went through what you went through. Your past doesn't define you; it prepares you.

Are You Ready for the Next Step?
I know it’s scary. I know the voice in your head is saying, "But what if I fail again?"
I get it. I was skeptical too. But I’m living proof that GRACE is bigger than your mistakes. Recovery isn’t a destination; it’s a journey of walking hand-in-hand with a God who loves you more than you can imagine.
If you’re looking for someone to speak to your group, your church, or your organization about the power of redemption and the reality of faith-based recovery, I would love to connect. Whether it's a Speaking Engagement or just a conversation about how your past can become your purpose, let’s talk.
You are not alone. You are not a lost cause. You are REDEEMED.
Take the first step today. Reach out, find a meeting, or just spend five minutes talking to God in your own words. He’s listening.
